What is Functional Medicine?

Diseases

The genetic/epigenetic (SNP-Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms) structure of the person, which accepts the person as a whole with the soul, body and mind, and considers all the systems that form the whole together, by using more advanced biochemistry, microbiology and genetic tests in addition to the tests commonly applied in hospitals in standard medicine, It is an advanced medical practice that offers a personalized treatment approach by taking into account the body’s toxin (heavy metal, etc.) load at the tissue level and micronutrient (vitamin-mineral and omega3) levels at the intra-cellular level.

Functional medicine is the personalized medicine approach of the future

Functional medicine claims to offer a better solution for chronic diseases, autoimmune diseases, and chronic inflammatory diseases that standard medical practices are not sufficient to fully treat. The title we call chronic inflammatory diseases ranges from diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, rheumatological disorders, eczema, etc. Psoriasis is a title that covers many diseases, from Multiple Sclerosis to allergies and asthma. The underlying cause of all these diseases is most likely chronic inflammation. Therefore, functional medicine support has a very positive contribution to routine standard medical treatment in all these diseases. However, functional medicine applications for these patients must be carried out by communicating with the doctors of the relevant branch.

Functional Medicine's Approach to Root Causes

In the functional medicine approach; The root cause underlying disease states is very important. For example, the real cause of depression can vary greatly from patient to patient. The condition may be caused by leaky gut disease, which occurs when the immune system is triggered to produce antibodies against the thyroid caused by gluten, leading to low thyroid function and depression. The problem may be B12 deficiency due to long-term use of acid-blocking medications for reflux, or folate deficiency caused by a gene called MTFHR (Methylene Tetra Hydrofolate Reductase), or vitamin D deficiency due to insufficient sunlight. It may be mercury poisoning due to a diet containing too much tuna, omega-3 deficiency due to a diet lacking in fatty fish, or latent diabetes (low glucose tolerance) due to a high sugar diet. Symptoms may arise from a change in brain chemistry due to trauma or stress in life, or even from a disturbance in the gut flora due to antibiotic use. Although all these factors – nutrition, environment, lifestyle – create a different imbalance, they all lead to depression. Knowing the name of a disease does not tell us anything about its real cause and does not direct us to the correct treatment. This is the disease delusion.

Standard Medicine vs. Functional Medicine: Focusing on the Root Cause Instead of Treatments Targeting the Symptom

While standard medical practice focuses more on differential diagnosis, naming the disease, and applying medications and surgeries that match the disease. Functional medicine focuses on finding out where the underlying functional disorder originates, that is, the root cause, rather than the name or region of the disease, and reveals the cause of the disease through advanced laboratory tests, and then applies personalized treatments to eliminate the cause. It focuses on the root cause by not using the concept of idiopathic (cause unknown) which is frequently used in standard medicine.
In standard medical practice, patients visit many departments and are given many different drug prescriptions. For example, the patient who will apply to dermatology for skin rash, endocrinology for Hashimoto’s thyroid, and gastroenterologist for inflammatory bowel disease will receive different examinations and different prescriptions from three different specialists, specific to their branches. Functional medicine applies advanced tests to reveal the common underlying functional disorders of these diseases, which are examined separately, and plans treatments to support the functions. As a result of all tests and detailed anamnesis, the diet program, exercise and nutritional supplements recommended under the control of a functional medicine specialist make significant contributions to the treatment of diseases when applied together with the standard treatment of the specialist physician for that disease.
